HOW IT ALL STARTED

Proper Brown is an independent South Asian magazine and cultural platform based in Yorkshire, showcasing creativity, culture, stories and ideas across print, online and in-person events.

Founded in 2023 as The Cosy Desi Club, the platform began as a space to champion South Asian creatives and create more opportunities to connect, share work, and be seen. Since then, it has grown across publishing, exhibitions, creative events, screenings, interviews and collaborations, with contributors and audiences from across the UK and beyond.

Proper Brown brings together emerging and established voices across writing, art, photography, film and wider culture. Our print magazine sits alongside year-round online editorial features and in-person events designed to put good work in front of new audiences and bring people together.

The name has changed, but the ethos hasn’t: champion South Asian creativity, stay open to new ideas, and make space for work worth seeing and stories worth sharing.
